Privacy Policy

The short version: ClipScript does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data to any server we operate. Everything happens locally in your browser.

What ClipScript Does

ClipScript is a Chrome extension that lets you export the transcript of any YouTube video to Markdown, plain text, or Obsidian format. It also provides transcript search, clickable timestamps, and an optional AI summary feature.

Data We Do Not Collect

ClipScript does not collect, transmit, or store any of the following:

Your name, email address, or any account information
Your browsing history or YouTube watch history
The transcripts you export or copy
Your AI API keys beyond your own browser storage
Any usage analytics or telemetry

We operate no servers and receive no data from your use of the extension.

Data Stored Locally in Your Browser

ClipScript stores the following data in Chrome's local storage (chrome.storage.local) on your device only. This data never leaves your browser:

AI provider and API key — if you use the AI Summary feature, your chosen provider and API key are saved so you don't have to re-enter them. This key is stored only on your device.
Custom summary prompt — if you set a custom AI prompt, it is saved locally alongside your provider settings.
PRO license key — if you purchase ClipScript PRO, your Gumroad license key and activation status are stored locally so the extension remembers your purchase.

You can clear all locally stored data at any time by removing the extension from Chrome or clearing extension storage via Chrome's developer tools.

YouTube Transcript Access

ClipScript reads the transcript of the YouTube video you are currently watching. This is done entirely within your browser by communicating with YouTube's own servers — the same servers that serve the transcript panel inside YouTube itself. No transcript data is sent to us.

AI Summary Feature

The AI Summary feature is optional and requires you to supply your own API key from a provider of your choice (Google Gemini, OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, DeepSeek, or OpenRouter).

When you use this feature, the video transcript is sent directly from your browser to your chosen AI provider's API. ClipScript does not act as an intermediary — the request goes from your browser directly to the provider. Your use of that service is governed by that provider's own privacy policy and terms of service.

Your API key is stored only in your browser's local storage and is sent only to your chosen provider.

License Verification (PRO)

When you activate a PRO license, ClipScript sends your license key to Gumroad's verification API to confirm the purchase is valid. Only the license key is transmitted — no other personal or device information is included in this request. Gumroad's privacy policy governs how they handle this data.

Once verified, your activation status is stored locally and no further verification requests are made.

Permissions

ClipScript requests the following Chrome permissions, each with a specific purpose:

activeTab — to read the current YouTube tab's video ID and title
scripting — to fetch the transcript from within the YouTube page context (required due to YouTube's cross-origin restrictions)
storage — to save your API key, custom prompt, and license status locally
sidePanel — to display the ClipScript panel inside Chrome
tabs — to detect when you switch to a different YouTube video and refresh the panel automatically

Third-Party Services

ClipScript interacts with the following third-party services, solely at your direction:

YouTube (Google) — to fetch video transcripts from the page you are viewing
Gumroad — for one-time license purchase and verification
Your chosen AI provider (Gemini, OpenAI, Claude, DeepSeek, or OpenRouter) — only when you use the AI Summary feature

ClipScript has no affiliation with YouTube, Google, or any AI provider.

Children's Privacy

ClipScript does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under 13. As the extension collects no personal data at all, it does not pose specific risks to children's privacy.

Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of ClipScript after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
